50 HUSKERS TO KNOW: No. 42

Our 50 Huskers to Know series returns for the fall, as we count down the key players on Nebraska’s 2010 team. Check back throughout fall camp for the countdown, and scroll to the bottom for links to the whole list.

No. 42 Austin Cassidy, Peso, 6-1, 210, Jr.

A backup both to Eric Hagg and Rickey Thenarse/Dejon Gomes, Cassidy is smart, flexible, physical and faster than you might think. While he’s not necessarily an ideal coverage guy – at least not like Hagg and Gomes are – he’ll rarely get out of position and he’ll stick his nose in there to make tackles.

Cassidy is also one Nebraska’s best players on kick and punt coverage units. He’s in the running to become the team’s holder, as well. Guys who can do a little bit of everything – plus serve as good mentors to the underclassmen – are valuable chess pieces to have on a team.
