It’s a Trap!, Pre-Pre-Preseason Rankings and Safety Precautions

Every week, the Husker Locker staff sits down after being presented a number of questions addressing various aspects of Nebraska Cornhuskers sports. With no prior knowledge of the other panelists’ answers, here are their thoughts:

This week:

What’s Nebraska’s biggest trap game in 2012?

Brian: Northwestern. Right in the middle of a four-game stretch that will decide what the ‘12 edition of the football team will be remembered for. It could be a four-game winning streak, but that run could also be a 1-3 spell or even worse, a four-game losing streak.

The Wildcats aren’t to be better than they were last year. You could make the case for UCLA, but I don’t think the Bruins will have a idea of what they can do until they hit Pac-12 play.

Derek: While I’ll be addressing this question further in the coming weeks as I evaluate Nebraska’s schedule, I think Minnesota may be the Huskers’ biggest threat in terms of trap games. If Jerry Kill’s team wins early (I’ll be watching their season-opening game against UNLV with far more angst than I should), they’ll likely put up a fight against good teams in November.

Nebraska could be looking forward to a game at Iowa that determines who gets a shot at a BCS berth resulting a Senior Day letdown. For what it’s worth, Nebraska hasn’t lost on Senior Day since 2004.

Brandon: This was somewhat difficult to peg, but at this point, it looks to be UCLA. Arkansas State’s got Gus Malzhan, but not enough horses. Pelini won’t let the team look past Northwestern, especially in Evanston and while Minnnesota might get that distinction this year, playing in Memorial Stadium should nullify anything MarQueis Gray can do.

UCLA has a new coach, a new attitude and a chance to come out of the gate with a national attention-grabbing victory over a name team. While Nebraska will have a presence in Pasadena, I have an ominous feeling about that second game of the season.
