The Big Ten made the predictable choice Thursday to select Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for its inaugural football championship game in December 2011.

The league will sign a deal with the Indiana Sports Corp. over the next 30 days to assign the game to Indy for a single year while doing what Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany called “due diligence” are other potential sites in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Green Bay, among others. Delany hinted at Big Ten Media Days that the league would select a single site for 2011, then concentrate on considering whether to rotate the location or anchor it at a specific site.

Lucas Oil, which opened in 2008, has already hosted the 2010 NCAA Final Four. In 2012, it will become fourth northern domed stadium to host the Super Bowl.
