Practice Report 10/11: Compton Returns

It’s about six weeks after Bo Pelini would have liked to have Will Compton preparing for a football game, but the head coach welcomed back the sophomore linebacker all the same Monday as Compton returned to practice after rehabbing his broken foot.

“He did pretty good out there today,” Pelini said of Compton, who practiced in a limited role. “Will’s got some experience, he’s got a good understand of what we’re doing. It really depends on how he feels.”

Compton returned as NU began preparation Monday for Texas. He rejoins a linebacking corps that had primarily relied upon junior LaVonte David – who leads the Big 12 in tackles per game and was just recently named the league’s Player of the Week for 16 tackles in a 48-13 win over Kansas State.

“He’s a good tackler,” Pelini said of David, a transfer from Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College. He’s a good football player. He does a lot of good things. He’s not as small as people think he is. Sometimes he looks like he’s smaller because he runs so fast. He’s a 220, 225-pound guy. He’s very explosive.”

Pelini called Monday’s workout “business as usual,” even if 3-2 Texas easily represents the most talented team the No. 4 Huskers have faced to date.

On with the report:

Particulars: Nebraska practiced for two hours inside the Hawks Championship Center in what Pelini termed a “regular practice.”

What’s New: Texas week! Nebraska is officially downplaying it. Also – Compton is back at practice, if not necessarily doing that much.

Coach Quote: “He’s the kid where, even though he’s been away, he’s stayed in meetings, he’s stayed working out. Mentally he’ll be ready. You wonder how he’ll respond physically.” Sanders on Compton.

Player Quote: “We’re on the field more, I know that. As soon as we get off the field, we look up and Taylor’s taking it for 80 yards. As soon we get a cup of Gatorade and sit down and relax, Taylor’s going the other way.” Pierre Allen on Nebraska’s offense scoring so quickly

Next Practice: Tuesday
