Vitals: 6’2”, 215 pounds
Place of Residence (School): Bolingbrook, Illinois (Bollingbrook High)
Who Else Has a Legitimate Shot: Illinois, Northwestern, Ohio State, Wisconsin
Why Nebraska Wants Him: Nebraska’s current quarterback depth chart is a mess. The only viable backup option the Huskers have is Brion Carnes and if all reports are true, his mental issues keep him from truly threatening Taylor Martinez’s starting spot.
This means that Martinez won’t see legitimate competition until true freshman Tommy Armstrong arrives. Carnes then finds himself locked in the backup role at best, if not a Co. No-2 with Armstrong.
If the Huskers secure Bailey, they afford themselves the option of throwing Armstrong into the fire if necessary or taking advantage of his redshirt year along with Bailey’s.
This is obviously the ideal option as it would provide Tim Beck with two young, talented quarterbacks with a year’s experience against FBS speed to challenge a then-senior Martinez.
Visits: He’s currently visiting Nebraska following an unofficial visit to Wisconsin this past week.
Bottom Line: Following Malik Zaire’s commitment to Notre Dame, Matt Alviti’s commitment to Northwestern and JT Barrett’s apparent lack of interest, Bailey appears to be the best option for a high school quarterback Nebraska has left.
