Lil' Red
509 views
Lil' Red is one of two mascots at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's athletics teams. Lil' Red is the newest mascot, having been created for the 1993 season after a state wide contest run for that purpose. Associate athletic director Dr. Barbara Hibner was the driving force in the creation of Lil' Red.
He can be seen on the sidelines of a Nebraska football game at Memorial Stadium, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center during basketball games and at volleyball games. The mascot is currently produced by Signs and Shapes International, Inc. based in Omaha, Nebraska. The wearer of the costume wears a "PowerBelt," a belt with an air circulation system, which brings in over 100 cubic feet (2.8 m3) of fresh outside air per minute. This is enough fresh air to accommodate roughly 1,000 people. Due to the mascot's incredibly light weight, the larger-than-life mascot can run, dance, crowd surf and shake hands.
Since its installment, Lil' Red has won two major awards. The first was the national championship at the NCAA National Mascot Competition in 1999. The second one was an induction into the 2007 Mascot Hall of Fame, which selected its winners by an online votePermanent Link to this Blog Post

Sanders first hire by Carl
1,004 views
Anybody else find it fishy that Sanders abruptly left the program, quit coaching for family/personal reasons and is already back coaching? I wonder what the real reason was that Sanders left the program, seems like there is way more to the story than were told (usually is). Our DBs were money under his guidance. Good luck at FAU Marv and Carl.

Past and Present: Memorial Stadium Pics
643 views
From one of the first games with Iowa in 1913 where the Husker beat Iowa 12-0, to the game today where the Cornhuskers defeated Iowa 20-7, Memorial Stadium has witnessed some remarkable changes. As Memorial Stadium gets a new face on the east side, you might want recall the changes the home of the Huskers has gone through over the years. The following album can be found in the card file at Burlington Antiques in the Lincoln Nebraska Haymarket. Nebraska vs. Iowa Black Friday?
The day after Thanksgiving has been a big tradition for Husker nation for many years. What is that tradition? Football if you already didn't know. Nebraska will play Iowa for the first time since 2000. I don't know about everyone else but I am excited for this game. Our chance to shut up the fellow corn growers next door. The question is will it really be a black Friday?
By black Friday I mean will the Husker defense come to play like they did against Michigan State. The defense this year has left most Nebraska fans with a sour taste in their mouth. We have been up and down and inconsistent to say the least. Chalk it up to injuries or chalk it up to inexperience I don't know but it is something I did not expect to see this year. We have had a few excellent showings this year but we seem to lack the ability to follow it up. Most analysts say we have not taken that next step to be great.
Statistically we have gotten better since the embarrassing performance at Camp Randal but we are still inconsistent. Big blowout losses to Wisconsin and Michigan have hurt us. Not to mention Northwestern walking into Lincoln and doing what Fresno State almost did. I have always been a fan of great defense and with Nebraska we had found that for the past two seasons. This year we found ourselves in unfamiliar territory. Don't get me wrong we have faced some very strong opponents but we did also in the Big 12. Instead of controlling games like the defenses in 2009 and 2010 we found ourselves playing catch-up and failing to execute on critical downs.
Nebraska has come up with its best defensive game plans against dropback passing quarterbacks. I have not watched much of Iowa this year but from what I have seen Vandenberg is not going to gash us like a Russel Wilson, or Denard Robinson. However, we can't forget about Marcus Coker. This guy has shown what smash mouth football is all about. If we play at least half as good as we did against Michigan State we should find ourselves in a great spot to win this game.
Come this Friday I hope to see that angry defense of years past. The passion we have lacked all year and some consistency. This game is more than just a rivalry game for Nebraska. It is a step in the process. Now whether that step is forward or backward no one will know till the outcome. It is so hard to predict what Nebraska team is going to show up. Let's hope for the sake of our fans, seniors, and coaches it is the best one we have seen yet.
Remember, We'll all stick together in all kinds of weather
For dear old Nebraska U.
Go Big Red!!!!

Another Fight?
It's a sad news for all Pacquiao fasn out there. The commonly called People's Champ is not a champ anymore in the eyes of all the boxing analyst and boxing fans out there. Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao has been sweeped off in the tops spot in almost all the top sports channels and sites worldwides. It really was a surprise for me being a fan of Pacquiao for long years now. But I guess the saying that goes like this "You really can't have it all!" suits Pacquiao the most. In a research paper that I have read about him, he was really successful in his own hometown and he really got into lots of things before recieving all teh fame in this world. Considered to be the "mortal enemy" of Mexico in the field of boxing. Now after the recent fight that he had with Juan Manuel Marquez, has gotten to be a controversial one.
The trilogy fight of Marquez and Pacquiao has been the center of all attention and it gotten worst during the result and a lot of things has been said regarding the controversial winning of Pacquiao in that match, when all thought it was Marquez who really deserved the belt after all. Pacquiao wins but yet not all are convinced with his performance. The controversial fight that slpits the decison of many boxing enthusiast on who they really think is the best. Pacquiao's current rank from being always at the top drops down to the second spot which brings back Mayweather to the Top Spot once again after his controversial fight with Ortiz that also gained a lot of controversy.
Since both Mayweather and Pacquiao came from a very controversial fight this year. Could I still expect that there could be a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight by next year. A fight that will name who is the greatest between the two of them. This could probably one of the fight that all have been waiting for. Or should I expect for a Pacquiao-Marquez fight again,Permanent Link to this Blog Post

Huskers "Spank" Wisconsin, Win Share of Big Ten Title
1,847 views
Nebraska "spanked" Wisconsin tonight and won a share of the Big Ten volleyball championship in the final regular-season "Senior Day" match in Lincoln. Even though many of us wish that this was a football article, we are talking about the fourth-ranked Husker Volleyball team who won 12-25, 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 against the Wisconsin Badgers at the NU Coliseum.
The Huskers entered the match needing to win to secure at least a share of the Big Ten Title. The second place teams, Illinois and Purdue needed to lose one match. Illinois (7) lost to Michigan State and Penn State (12) defeated Purdue (8).
If Nebraska (23-3) defeats Iowa on Tuesday or Northwestern on Saturday they can be the sole champion in the Big 10. "We don't want to share it," NU coach John Cook said. "We've come this far, we've got to find a way to win this thing."
Nebraska's (16-2) only losses in the Big 10 was to Penn State and Purdue.Permanent Link to this Blog Post

Nebraska vs. Penn State: A True Class Act
395 views
While watching Saturday's game I could not help but notice the class of the Nebraska players and fans. It all started when both teams met at midfield to pray. This was an unexpected event for every fan that was watching. When I saw this occur I could not help but smile. This made me proud to be a Husker. Now this meeting at midfield did not have to happen but I am glad it did. It was good for Nebraska and especially good for Penn State.
The stadium errupted in applause for both teams as they walked towards each other. As they all knelt Ron Brown (Nebraska's running backs coach) lead the team in a prayer. Ron Brown has shown his true Christian faith for many years at Nebraska. He likes to lead a prayer after each game for those that want to participate. He does not force his beliefs onto his peers; He is just a man who feels strongly about his faith. The message he sent was obviously heard loud and clear.
What occurred on that field was an absolute complete game by each team. A well fought battled which was what the viewers and fans wanted. Nebraska had a lot to play for. They were looking for a much needed road win in Big Ten play to keep them alive in the Legends division. Penn State had much more to play for. They were looking to stay atop the Leaders division with a win. They wanted to win one for Joe Pa. Last but not least they wanted to win for all the victims. Even though Penn State came out the loser I believe all of those victims witnessed a game where football prevailed over all the distractions.
Nebraska fans really surprised me by wearing red to the game. It is not often when your athletic director advises you to not wear your school colors to a football game, but they did it anyway. There were no fights in the stands it was calm. The Penn State fans acted very classy and were very respectful to everyone they encountered. The atmosphere there was what it should be. Even though the crowd was somewhat dead for a while they really got into it in the second half. Today while reading the news I saw that some alumni from Penn State had written letters to Nebraska thanking them for being so classy to their fans and most importantly their players.
Saturday's game was everything I wanted in a game. It was a well played game and went right down to the wire. Penn State should a lot of character and heart to keep fighting through all the adversity. I want to wish Penn State good luck in the remainder of their season and further.
Go Big Red! Beat Michigan!

Penn State - Nebraska Friends 2011
554 views
As we visited Happy Valley for the Penn State game on Saturday 2011 we watched not only Nebraska doing exactly what they needed to do – Stand united, but I was amazed that two passionate alumni were also thrilled at the prayer scene. My Husker wasn’t just united with her Dad, but also embraced her Penn State work colleague who joined us for the game.
People from both sidelines and across the stadium earned a great deal of respect for one another last Saturday. Nebraska’s great “cross-division rivalry” became a wonderful example of Nebraska and Penn State players, coaches, and fans looking forward to playing each other more than any team during the year.
From the pre-game prayer on the 50-yard line to the shaking of hands at the end, Nebraska and Penn State showed a great deal of respect for one another. It was a proud moment for Husker fans. The media frenzy was exactly that...a media frenzy. The game was about family, friends, fans and a group of young men playing the sport with passion.Permanent Link to this Blog Post

Ron Brown's Prayer - Penn State and Nebraska
2,303 views
I had a couple of requests for the transcript of Ron Brown’s prayer before today’s Penn State-Nebraska game. While some parts were difficult to transcribe due to crowd noise, I have gotten most of it down:
“Every one of these young men that was called to this platform today - Lord, we know, we know we don’t have control of all of the events that took place this week but we do know that you are bigger than it all. And we give you the glory that you are going to protect this stadium today and this town and these university sponsors and these students, that you would give great sense to all of them, Lord. Remove the foolishness and that your common sense will reign and shine. Well, God, there are a lot of little boys around the country today watching this game and they’re trying to figure out what the definition of manhood is all about. Father, this is it right here. I pray that this game will be a training ground for what manhood looks like. That we would compete with fierce intensity. With the honors, the gifts, and the talents that you have given us. And may we be reminded, Lord, that as it says in your word in John 1:14 that Jesus is full of grace, and truth. May the truth be known. May justice be known. Would you protect the victims (tough to understand over crowd claps)? Would you say grace and forgiveness for the lives of all of those involved? (More parts tough to understand over crowd). Now give us a great game, a game that honors you, and in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.”

Should the Show Go On?
As everyone knows now of this morning, Joe Paterno is officailly out as Penn State's coach. This was shocking to me and most every college football fan. Paterno had already declared earlier in the day that he would retire after the seasons end. The board of trustees had other plans. They voted to fire Paterno in the best interest of Penn State University. What shocked me even more than the firing of Joe Paterno was the conduct of Penn State students. A rally or what I will call a riot broke out after the news Paterno being fired. Almost 3,000 students stormed University Ave. to show their feelings about the news.
Now I understand this is a very small minority of students but rioting is rioting it doesn't matter if its 15 people or 10,000 people those situations can turn dangerous and even deadly in a matter of minutes. I have heard many ESPN analysts remind us that it has nothing to do with football, but those students are most likely fans of their school's sports.
Do you as a team want to walk into stadium full of 100,000 people who could be on edge and snap in a matter of seconds? With only two days until Nebraska and Penn State kickoff cancellation or even relocation of the game seems not possible. The game will be played in my opinion unless reactions get progressively worse as the day goes on.
Being in the shoes of a Nebraska player you have to know how to react. The best way to do that is to ignore that situation and focus on what you need to do to be ready to play a football game. This is different for Penn State though. A player there has to deal with the distractions of the situation. It is up to the captains of that team to calm every player and let them know they need to be ready to play Saturday at 11:00.
So to me should the show go on? No but I have a feeling it will. Nebraska will have to be ready to walk into a circus and play a football game. Bo Pelini will have the team ready I have no doubts about that. The players need to be ready to conduct themselves in a proper manner. Play your game, Win your game, and get out of Happy Valley safely.
Fans be safe, Players be safe, and Coaches be safe.

The Inferno In Happy Valley
252 views
Alright. I know I am 1,091 miles from Penn State University right now, so I don't know the complete situation, but I do know what's being released. I also know that this is a disaster; this is an inferno right now.
As you know, Joe Paterno was fired tonight and Graham Spanier stepped down as President due to the sexual abuse allegations that arose recently.
Many of my friends are talking to me and are in disbelief why they fired him now. However, they aren't quite reading up on the story as they should be if they want to have a valid opinion on the matter.
The chanting of "We Want Joe" on Beaver Ave. makes me sick, but yet, I understand it. I understand it because of the fact that JoePa had been the coach at Penn State for a very very long time. However, it makes me sick because they aren't thinking of the entire story. They are basically placing more value on college football than the protection and justice for the boys who made the allegations.
Speculation is circling around Twitter and Facebook that someone needs to forfeit the game this week, whether it be the Nebraska Cornhuskers or the Penn State Nittany Lions. That's another thing right now I'm not completely sure about.
Canning him via a phone call was a little classless, in my opinion. Couldn't a representative from the University go to his house and tell him in person? That's like breaking up with a spouse via phone. It is undoubtedly true that JoePa was married to Penn State.
This entire ordeal reminds me of what happened at my the high school finals of Nebraska state soccer in 2010. Sure, that isn't even close to the magnitude of what is going on in Happy Valley, but it was sure big news at the time. No one remembers that the Lincoln East Spartans had a perfect season that year and was nationally ranked. Everyone remembers how former students threw green cards on to the field in response to playing a primarily ethnically Latino high school. I hope for the sake of college football that people do remember the JoePa legacy, and not just remember the last few weeks of his collegiate career.Permanent Link to this Blog Post

Where are the fan forums that used to be on the front page?
One thing that I used to really like about this site is that the fans could post forums that showed up right on the front page of Husker Locker. You could see the last 10 or so fan forums posted immediately when you viewed the site. Some kind of a change has been made to eliminate these altogether, or they are now buried. I thought that a lot of good discussion took place on those forums, and if fans can't see them immediately, then they (and me) lose interest and those discussions just don't take place or get far less traffic. I realize that this season the forums seemed to take on a life of people posting just looking to buy/sell tickets, but I figured that this was unique to this first season in the Big Ten, and then these forums would once again be dominated by good conversations about the Huskers and college football.
Please bring the old format back.Permanent Link to this Blog Post

JoePa's Future Uncertain
149 views
Everyone in the sports world should know about the scandal coming to light in Pennsylvania. If you don't, you've been living under a rock for the past few days.
Even though the Nittany Lions' players were never coached by Jerry Sandusky, this week and those weeks to come are going to be difficult. The press is all over this story, look at ESPN and all the writeups about it. Hell, just being a part of the university right now is definitely going to have bad connotations.
The game this weekend is going to mean a lot to both teams. Nebraska, coming off a heart-breaking loss to an unranked Northwestern and Penn State trying to see some light while being involved in this depressing mess.
Several questions loom throughout college football and Penn State: Is JoePa going to retire due to the chaos? Could he have managed this better in the past? Why was his press conference canceled? Other moral questions surround the university as well. One thing is for certain, this isn't "just going to go away".Permanent Link to this Blog Post

TeamMates Mentoring Challenge
213 views
Coaches from Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa are in the race to garner more mentors for the TeamMates program before Nov. 21st.
Tom and Nancy Osborne founded the TeamMates Mentoring Program in 1991 in an effort to provide support and encouragement to school aged youth. The goal of the program is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education. To reach this goal, youth meet one hour per week with a caring adult who serves as a mentor. Mentors are volunteers from the community who have dedicated themselves to making a difference in the life of a young person. Mentors give youth a sense of hope, purpose and vision.
The TeamMates Mentoring Program currently provides a mentor for over 3,000 youth across Nebraska and Iowa. The goal of TeamMates is to serve 10,000 youth and be nationally recognized as the leading school-based mentoring program by 2015.
