The 50 Huskers to Know returns for the 2011 spring season! We count down the players you absolutely have to watch heading into spring football, culminating with No. 1 during NU's spring break.

The spring list, remember, is about players who are currently in the program, with an emphasis on redshirt freshmen and sophomores who might not have played much yet; in the fall, you'll see a list with more projected starters and incoming contributing recruits.

Not included on this list is wide receiver Khiry Cooper, who spends the spring with the Husker baseball team.

No. 28 Quarterback Brion Carnes

He's taken the old No. 15 jersey of his uncle, Tommie Frazier; if this 6-foot-1, 190-pounder can have half the career, Nebraska could add a couple Big Ten titles to its wall pretty soon. Carnes comes billed as a better-than-average passer with elusive skills as a runner. He's not a 80-yard-run type of guy like Taylor Martinez, but Carnes can scramble and buy time to make throws.

We haven't seen much of Carnes since a handful of fall camp drills when his motion and delivery had a bit of a loop in it. If he's shortened that delivery and grasps the new offense coordinated by Tim Beck, Carnes can throw his name in the ring for QB in 2011.

See all 50 Huskers! No. 50, No. 49, No. 48, No. 47, No. 46, No. 45, No. 44, No. 43, No. 42, No. 41, No. 40, No. 39, No. 38, No. 37, No. 36, No. 35, No. 34, No. 33, No. 32, No. 31, No. 30, No. 29

Carnes has flown a little under the radar at NU sandwiched between players like Martinez and Jamal Turner/Bubba Starling. But, I think that Carnes may have a lot to offer and I wouldn't count him out of the rotation or competition. He may not be as heralded as some of these other players, but I think that he could be really good in his own right, and if he never gains a starting role, then I think that he can at least provide a quality backup - probably better than Green.
