50 HUSKERS TO KNOW: No. 35
The spring list, remember, is about players who are currently in the program, with an emphasis on redshirt freshmen and sophomores who might not have played much yet; in the fall, you'll see a list with more projected starters and incoming contributing recruits.
Not included on this list is wide receiver Khiry Cooper, who spends the spring with the Husker baseball team.
No. 35 Punter/kicker Brett Maher
The best dual purpose kicker/punter in school history, Alex Henery, has left the building. True freshman Mauro Bondi won't be arriving until fall. That leaves Maher – the No. 2 punter last year, and probably the No. 3 kicker – presumably in the top spot, for now.
Maher gave Henery a pretty good run for his money in the punting race last year, and we expect him to secure a pretty good hold on that this spring. Punting at the college level involves a little more than a booming leg; there's kick placement, understanding fakes, incorporating a rugby style if needed, etc. Maher gives NU its most experienced option for now.
As a placekicker, we'll see. Maher concentrated more on that last fall camp, but it's unclear how well he did or how much progress he made. If he had been terrific, however, it's fair to say NU may not have looked so hard for a scholarship kicker after its top target, Niklas Sade, decommitted.
See all 50 Huskers!
