50 HUSKERS TO KNOW: No. 44
6,305 views
The 50 Huskers to Know returns for the 2011 spring season! We count down the players you absolutely have to watch heading into spring football, culminating with No. 1 during NU's spring break.
The spring list, remember, is about players who are currently in the program, with an emphasis on redshirt freshmen and sophomores who might not have played much yet; in the fall, you'll see a list with more projected starters and incoming contributing recruits.
Not included on this list is wide receiver Khiry Cooper, who spends the spring with the Husker baseball team.
No. 44 Wide receiver Stanley Jean-Baptiste
If you had to pick a mystery man for NU's program, it's this guy, with one of the coolest names. Jean-Baptiste, a 6-3, 205-pounder originally out of Miami – who then went to prep school and Fort Scott Community College in Kansas – hasn't played a game of college football. Not a down at Ft. Scott. So he's roughly 2½ years removed from competition. And yet, given the fairly disheveled nature of NU's wide receiving corps after starter Brandon Kinnie, Jean-Baptiste has a chance to make some noise in this camp. How much will he make?
We don't know much about the guy, other than he's a decent deep threat with good speed and leaping ability. Now-departed receivers coach Ted Gilmore felt like Jean-Baptiste needed to work on his blocking – big surprise there, coming from Gilmore – and improve the detailing of his routes. Our take: If Jean-Baptiste can make his share of plays downfield, he'll get a shot. Nebraska needs a big-bodied wide receiver who can go up and get it.
