Big 12 Rankings, Week Seven
Last Game: Beat Iowa State 52-0
Summary: The Sooners are hitting their stride at home, and the offense racked up 672 of the easiest yards you'll ever see. Landry Jones hit 30 of 34 passes, Ryan Broyles caught 15 and OU rushed for 325 yards. Now Oklahoma is breaking in true freshman running backs Roy Finch and Brennan Clay to back up DeMarco Murray. Watch out, Missouri.
Next Game: at Mizzou Saturday
No. 2 Missouri
Last Game: Beat Texas A&M 30-9
Summary: The Tigers are playing their defense in Lord knows how long. Mizzou is second in scoring defense and fourth in sacks, which is a key way of shutting teams down in the red zone. On offense, Missouri has receivers who can run after the catch, particularly T.J. Moe, who caught 6 passes for 110 yards Saturday.
Next Game: Oklahoma. College GameDay comes to town, Missouri plays its biggest home game in years, and the Tigers will have a shot against OU's inconsistent defense. The Big 12 game of the year isn't the one everybody expected, but it's here anyway.
No. 3 Oklahoma State
Last Game: Beat Texas Tech 34-17
Summary: Is Justin Blackmon really this unstoppable, or has OSU played a slew of pretty awful defensive teams in the first six games? The Cowboys' offensive stats are a little inflated, yes, but they have a semblance of balance when you throw running back Kendall Hunter into the mix, and the Pokes' defense shuts down the run pretty well. An early lead over Tech made the difference Saturday.
Next Game: Nebraska. OSU's won three of the last four vs. the Huskers.
No. 4 Texas
Last Game: Beat Nebraska 20-13
Summary: The offense still limps along, and it's not necessarily going to get much better. But UT's defense is fairly spectacular. Fast, mean, athletic. UT looks like the 2009 Nebraska squad. The Longhorns could beat anyone – or stumble along the way.
Next Game: vs. Iowa State. Oof.
No. 5 Nebraska
Last Game: Lost to Texas 20-13
Summary: The Huskers have way too many things to clean up on special teams, and it's not clear whether the Huskers can deliver in the passing game if they need to do it. Taylor Martinez is still the man at NU, but defenses have a blueprint on how to do stop him now.
Next Game: at Oklahoma State. The Pokes are riding high and playing with momentum.
No. 6 Baylor
Last Game: Beat Colorado 31-25
Summary: The Bears take a big jump with this hard-fought road win. The Bears overcame three turnovers and 71yards in penalties to hold off the Buffaloes, who missed a pass in the end zone on the game's final play. If Robert Griffin III isn't officially back from his knee injury, he should be: 371 total yards. Don't look now, but Baylor could be headed for a bowl game.
Next Game: Kansas State. The Bears have more athletes.
No. 7 Kansas State
Last Game: Beat Kansas 59-7
Summary: The Wildcats never – and I mean never – let their foot off the gas pedal under Bill Snyder, who I'm sure took some pleasure in that woodshed beating last Thursday night. KSU's vanilla offense of counters, isos and passes to the tight end was potent beyond belief.
Next Game: at Baylor. The Cats have more heft.
No. 8 Texas A&M
Last Game: Lost to Missouri 30-9
Summary: It's like watching Bill Callahan, circa 2005, all over again. The Aggies throw the ball entirely too much with quarterback Jarrod Johnson, stink in the red zone, never think about field position and can't tackle. Missouri isn't that much more talented than A&M – if at all - but the Tigers are that much more disciplined.
Next Game: at Kansas. If A&M loses there, Coach Mike Sherman is gone.
No. 9 Colorado
Last Game: Lost to Baylor 31-25
Summary: CU was headed for a 22-13 lead in the third quarter when Will Jefferson – who moved to running back this week because the Buffaloes had, let's see, one guy there – fumbled as he was going into the end zone. The life of a Colorado fan. CU is still a tough out, with a bowl still out there.
Next Game: vs. Texas Tech. Highly winnable.
No. 10 Iowa State
Last Game: Lost to Oklahoma 52-0
Summary: ISU schedule is laughably unfair, and the Cyclones lack a big-game guy at quarterback. Austen Arnaud completed plenty of passes Saturday – for 102 yards. ISU had 183 yards in all.
Next game: at Texas. It will be more competitive.
No. 11 Texas Tech
Last Game: Lost to Oklahoma State 34-17
Summary: The defense still stinks and the offense isn't as good as it used to be under Mike Leach. What gives, Riverboat?
Next Game: at Colorado, where Tech as never won.
No. 12 Kansas
Last Game: Lost to Kansas State 59-7
Summary: There's a way to lose without getting humiliated. Turner Gill needs to buy the pamphlet soon.
Next: vs. Texas A&M. The Aggies struggle to put any opponent away, so the Jayhawks should enjoy the company.
