Hello, Position Change!

Linebackers coach Mike Ekeler told a Husker audience at the Big Red Breakfast in Omaha this morning that linebacker Eric Martin is in the process of switching to defensive end.

"You're going to like what you see," Ekeler said.

Martin played extensively two games at linebacker this year vs. Washington and South Dakota State, even earning a Blackshirt for a time. He lost that Blackshirt midway through the year. He's been a star on special teams, although a hit on an Oklahoma State player during Niles Paul's 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown earned him a suspension from the Big 12.

Perhaps he gets used kind of like Von Miller at ATM? Again, if Martin understands and upholds his responsibilities at the position, then I think this is great. I could see him being hard to block because of his speed and raw strength. Also need to make sure that the coaches are drilling into his head the proper tackling technique. As long as he doesn't create more personal foul penalties than sacks, I think that this will be great.

Hopefully we use him like a Clay Matthews rush end, which I think we will.

You get your best players on the field, you need play makers, not gap fillers. Our defense needs a mean, aggressive player to make the other team have to game plan around him. Qb's we play against are not spending enough time on their keester, with a big wince on their face.

You can tell the opposing players on special teams stay away from this guy cause he is going to bring the wood. If he can play DE the same way, we have got something here. Sounds like a smart move, turn the hounds loose and tree some QB's for a change.

We need pressure on the quarterback. A great quarterback will just pick the backfield apart, no matter how good they are. It is difficult to throw an accurate pass if you are lying on your back.
