Pelini Gets New Contract
NU athletic director Tom Osborne announced a new contract Monday for the second-year head coach that will pay him $1.851 million per year. The contract runs through Feb. 28, 2014, and puts Pelini in the middle of the pack for Big 12 coaches. Before this new contract, Pelini was 11th in the league.
“When you compare Bo’s performance and experience with other coaches, he was certainly deserving of a significant salary increase,” Osborne said. “We made good progress in one year under Bo’s leadership and we are confident he has our program moving in the right direction.”
Pelini guided NU to a 9-4 season in 2008 after Bill Callahan was fired after a 5-7 season in 2007.
Said Pelini: “I am very appreciative of the commitment Coach Osborne and our administration have made to our football program and our coaching staff. Working for Coach Osborne is a great situation, and as I said when I was hired, it is an honor to be here at Nebraska as the head coach. I hope to be in this position for a long time and help get this program back to the top of college football.”
Osborne also increased the salaries for Husker assistants, increasing their total salary pool to around $2 million per year. According to figures in the Lincoln Journal-Star, offensive coordinator Shawn Watson will be paid $375,000, or $150,000 more than he was paid in 2008. Assistants Marvin Sanders, Barney Cotton, Ted Gilmore, Ron Brown, Carl Pelini and Tim Beck will make $208,360. Assistants Mike Ekeler and John Papuchis will make $150,000.
