    30/1980 BEST GAMES: No. 29

    By HuskerLocker

    Blog post image

Welcome to Husker Locker’s “30 Best Games since 1980” portion of the Summer 30 series. Check throughout June to see our updated rankings; the previous rankings will be housed at the bottom of this blog post.

Like or dislike our pick? Comment on it below. One key to remember throughout the “best game” portion of this series: Not every selection in this list is a win. In fact, more than a handful are losses. In gauging the “best” games we were not only looking for quality of play, but significant and memorable aspect. Hence, there are not a bunch of 58-3 wins over the Little Six on this list. Instead, it’s 30 games that mattered over the last 30 years - and some of those games NU didn’t win, although it played well.

    Nov. 11, 2006 - Nebraska 28 Texas A&M 27

“The Drive,” Zac Taylor edition. Nebraska trailed 27-21 with just under two minutes remaining when Taylor drove the Huskers 75 yards in 11 plays for the game-winning touchdown - a 9-yard fade pattern to Maurice Purify, who leapt high to make the catch. The win clinched Bill Callahan’s only Big 12 North Division title and simultaneously made Taylor NU’s all-time leading passer. It was a signature moment for Callahan’s signature offensive player.

And it almost didn’t happen. Barry Turner had to block a 42-yard field goal that would have given A&M a 30-21 lead. He deflected the kick enough for it to fall well short.

And it really shouldn’t have happened. Nebraska enjoyed a comfortable 21-7 lead before crawling into an offensive shell and giving up huge chunks of yards to the Aggies’ offense - a theme that would reemerge, for a whole season, in 2007.

But Taylor was called upon to rescue the Huskers, and he did. His biggest throw on the drive was arguably the finest of his career - a fourth-down, 22-yard rainbow dropped in to receiver Todd Peterson while Taylor was on the run.

    Check out the whole list!
