Many others have unsuccessfully tried and failed, to create an historic, hype anthem. This is the true Anthem for the Nebraska CornHusker football team "GO BIG RED" this Anthem tells a story about the past and the present. Johnny "The Jet" Rodgers personally gave it two thumbs up.

This year Nebraska Cornhuskers celebrates five decades of straight sell-out college football games, from November 3, 1962 'til September 01, 2012 - fifty years. It's hard to look at the numbers without being in awe. That's a long time. We've collectively gone through so many changes in this country that it would be cliche' for me to start a list, so I'll spare you. Instead I will present to some and introduce to others the hottest Husker Anthem in history, "GO BIG RED".

When Nebraskans are collectively talking about what's happened over the length of this sell-out streak, they're talking about a lifetime of history, triumph and champions. Soon they will be talking about this hit "GO BIG RED"

    The Inferno In Happy Valley

    By Shortister

Alright. I know I am 1,091 miles from Penn State University right now, so I don't know the complete situation, but I do know what's being released. I also know that this is a disaster; this is an inferno right now.

As you know, Joe Paterno was fired tonight and Graham Spanier stepped down as President due to the sexual abuse allegations that arose recently.

Many of my friends are talking to me and are in disbelief why they fired him now. However, they aren't quite reading up on the story as they should be if they want to have a valid opinion on the matter.

The chanting of "We Want Joe" on Beaver Ave. makes me sick, but yet, I understand it. I understand it because of the fact that JoePa had been the coach at Penn State for a very very long time. However, it makes me sick because they aren't thinking of the entire story. They are basically placing more value on college football than the protection and justice for the boys who made the allegations.

Speculation is circling around Twitter and Facebook that someone needs to forfeit the game this week, whether it be the Nebraska Cornhuskers or the Penn State Nittany Lions. That's another thing right now I'm not completely sure about.

Canning him via a phone call was a little classless, in my opinion. Couldn't a representative from the University go to his house and tell him in person? That's like breaking up with a spouse via phone. It is undoubtedly true that JoePa was married to Penn State.

This entire ordeal reminds me of what happened at my the high school finals of Nebraska state soccer in 2010. Sure, that isn't even close to the magnitude of what is going on in Happy Valley, but it was sure big news at the time. No one remembers that the Lincoln East Spartans had a perfect season that year and was nationally ranked. Everyone remembers how former students threw green cards on to the field in response to playing a primarily ethnically Latino high school. I hope for the sake of college football that people do remember the JoePa legacy, and not just remember the last few weeks of his collegiate career.

    JoePa's Future Uncertain

    By Shortister

Everyone in the sports world should know about the scandal coming to light in Pennsylvania. If you don't, you've been living under a rock for the past few days.

Even though the Nittany Lions' players were never coached by Jerry Sandusky, this week and those weeks to come are going to be difficult. The press is all over this story, look at ESPN and all the writeups about it. Hell, just being a part of the university right now is definitely going to have bad connotations.

The game this weekend is going to mean a lot to both teams. Nebraska, coming off a heart-breaking loss to an unranked Northwestern and Penn State trying to see some light while being involved in this depressing mess.

Several questions loom throughout college football and Penn State: Is JoePa going to retire due to the chaos? Could he have managed this better in the past? Why was his press conference canceled? Other moral questions surround the university as well. One thing is for certain, this isn't "just going to go away".

Who will face Nebraska in the Big 12 South Championship. Baylor or OSU?

    By sportsvoice

You show me the man who predicted No. 22 Baylor and No. 19 Oklahoma State would be playing for a shot to win the Big 12 south at this point in the season and I'll show you a sports writer who's A) tripping on hallucinogenic drugs or B) a genius.

But despite long odds the two teams stand triumphant at this point. Both the Bears and the Cowboys are part of a three-way tie with Oklahoma at the top of the south division, and they are making the rest of the country take notice. But in the words of the great Connor MacLeod, "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!"

The two are matching up this Saturday at 11:30 in what should be one of the most impressive showcases of offensive fire power in college football this year. Both of these teams end their seasons playing No. 11 Oklahoma and considering how inept Oklahoma has looked at times this year there is a good chance that if No. 7 Nebraska wins out in the north they'll be playing either OSU or Baylor for admission to a BCS bowl.

Iowa State comes into NU game as battle tested as any team in the country

    By sportsvoice

It would be easy for the No. 7 Nebraska Cornhuskers to overlook the Iowa State Cyclones coming into this week.

The Huskers roll into the contest as a 19-point favorite and coming off of their biggest win in years after beating then No. 6 Missouri.

But if NU is expecting ISU's unranked team to be intimidated they've got another thing coming. Here's the thing. Yes, Nebraska comes in looking impressive, especially after Roy Helu's record setting 307-yard effort. And yes, ISU has four losses including a seven point loss to Kansas State, who Nebraska annihilated by 31 points in Manhattan. But even so Iowa State should come into the game focused and ready to play.

Playing tough opponents is nothing new to Iowa State. The Cyclones have played a much tougher schedule than the Huskers have. They've played five teams ranked in the top-25 compared to the Huskers two.

If Nebraska comes into this game looking listless and unmotivated like it did during the Texas game they could be in for one heck of a rude awakening. Husker fans shouldn't forget, only one team coming into next week's match up managed to beat Texas.

Of course, with all credit due given to Iowa State, this one should still be a laugher. Those guys in Vegas didn't build those casinos by getting the point spread wrong all of the time, and 19-points is a big number. Not only that but those games against top-25 squads that Iowa State has played, well, they've been pretty ugly.

Iowa state has been stomped into the turf by quality competition all year, No. 11 OU bashed them 52-0, No. 6 Utah crushed them 68-27 and No. 15 Iowa walloped them 35-7.

All signs point to a blowout in Nebraska's favor, but there's always the chance of a let down after a big win like the one the Cornhuskers had last week, and that, would bring a tear to every Nebraska fan's eye.

Martinez shines in 51-41 thriller, but vaunted Husker D' gives NU fans some grey hairs and Missouri awaits

    By sportsvoice

Nebraska Cornhusker fans have been hearing about freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez's throwing ability since before the season. But until Saturday they hadn't really had a chance to see it.

That's because Martinez hadn't needed to use his arm in most games due to his blazing foot speed, and when he did need to throw he looked raw and his receivers looked incompetent. For all of T-Mart's ultra successful ground game, it looked like his aptitude in the aerial attack was little more than speculation.

Well, there's no more need for speculation. Not after Martinez detonated his explosive arm all over the hapless Oklahoma State secondary, brutalizing their defensive backfield for 5 touchdowns, 323 yds. and no picks while completing 25 passes in 35 attempts.

It was a good thing for the Huskers that his arm caught fire when it did. Saturday's 51-41 track meet may have been a one sided affair in the Pokes' favor had it not. The Cowboys torched a 'Skers defense that came into the game touted as one of the best in the country and left with their tails between their legs.

The blackshirts looked almost as bad as Oklahoma State's sad squad, who came into the contest ranked 114th nationally against the pass. Not that the they can be faulted too much for that. Saturday was OSU wide reciever phenom Justin Blackmon's heisman coming out party. Coming into the game he led the nation in both touchdowns and receiving yards, and he didn't miss a step on Saturday.

Many experts thought that an ordinarily stout blackshirt secondary might slow him down and rivals.com tagged the match up between him and Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara as the best wide receiver quarterback matchup of the year. That ended up being pretty anti-climactic, Blackmon caught more passes against Amukamara (5) than Amukamara had allowed in every game combined leading up to the showdown in Stillwater.

Amukamara and the rest of the blackshirts better shore up that secondary in a hurry. They'll face Blaine Gabbert when the 7th-ranked Missouri Tigers come to town next week, and while the offense he leads might not be as potent as Oklahoma State's, it still packs a lot of punch. The Tiger's defense is an intimidating group. If Nebraska gives up 41 points again, it's hard to see how Taylor Martinez will be able to bail them out.

Amukamara vs. Blackmon. The immovable object vs. the unstoppable force

    By sportsvoice

Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara will need to be at his best in Nebraska's 2:30 pm game in Stillwater, OK., Saturday.

He and the rest of the Cornhuskers' vaunted secondary have the potential to shut down one of the nation's top offences, but it's all in the execution, and Amukamara will need to lead the way.

The blackshirts are about to face an arial assault unlike anything they've seen yet, and for a defense that was embarassed by poor tackling last week, it'll be a chance to re-stake its claim to dominance against some of the best competition they'll ever see in college. That'll be easier said than done.

Oklahoma State's offensive stats are ridiculous. They're third in the nation in passing yards and second in points scored. If their quarterback Brandon Weeden keeps racking up passing yards at this clip, he's going to finish with up with just under 4,000 yds. on the season. And Weeden's not even the blackshirts' main worry.

Wide receiver Justin Blackmon will probably be looked at as the most dangerous man on the field. Blackmon not only leads his team in receiving yards and touchdowns, he also leads the nation. At some point this neo-Dez Bryant is going to be matched up against the Husker's Amukamura, and that should be some good TV.

Rivals.com has touted this as, "mabye the best wide-reciever cornerback matchup of the season."

The two athletes' are both big time college players. But unlike Amukamara, who is a proven veteran. Blackmon is new to the national spotlight. He's been burning slow and incompetent defenses all year long and he's never gone up against a corner of Amukamara's caliber. It'll be interesting to see if Amukamara can check him. If Blackmon is what he seems the Blackshirts are going to have their hands full.

Blackmon emerged on the scene seemingly from out of no-where after accumulating only 260 yards a season ago. This season he has exploded for 955 yards and 12 touchdowns over the first six games. Blackmon has yet to gain less then 125 yards in any game this season and has scored at least one touchdown in every game. Scarier still, he is coming off of a season high 207 yards against Texas Tech.

But before big red teeth get to chattering, it's worth noting that Blackmon and the Cowboys have yet to play a defense worth mentioning, and, the pass Nebraska's secondary isn't just worth mentioning, it's one of the best.

Right. So you were convincingly beaten in your own house by a rival who invaded your ancient conference and took it over. You've probably shed some internal tears by now Husker fans. Perhaps some of you have imbimbed a couple of cold beverages, and that's fine. But! It's not time for you to throw yourselves in front of a bus to escape the pain just yet! Unless your name is Glenn Beck, then go right ahead.

My point is that while it is certainly not time to give up on a very promising NU football season, it isn't the only star in the Husker sports constellation. Nu's perennial powerhouse volleyball program has gone somewhat unappreciated this year despite a stellar 17-1 start and a No. 3 overall ranking.

Unlike the footballers the Volleyball team held court against No. 11 Texas back on Oct. 2, with a convincing 3 games to 1 smackdown, and they'll get another chance to bring a hurtin' to the horns again come Oct. 27.

So, I'm not saying abandon the football team when it looks like it has finally made it's way back to it's former status as a perennial national power, and man, that sure feels good to say. I'm just saying don't let the volleyball team get swept under the rug in the process, they're pretty darned good too.

‘Elsewhere the sky is the roof of the world; but here the earth was the floor of the sky." --Willa Cather

From the 1927 book she wrote, called And Death Comes for the Archbishop. This quote was forwarded to Husker Locker by Tom Crisp, a former Holdrege, Nebraska resident and the author of the Book of Bill: Choice Words, Memorable Men. Tom Crisp lives in New York City. You might catch Tom on game day if you are in New York at the Irish Rogue Cafe with other Husker fans.

Cather grew up in Red Cloud and spent her childhood in the town which she later made famous by her writing career. Willa Cather attended college at the University of Nebraska. While in college, Cather became a regular contributor to the Nebraska State Journal. Later she moved to Pittsburgh, where she taught high school English and worked for Home Monthly.

She moved to New York City and began her writing career with McClure's Magazine. Cather’s style had a focus on Red Cloud and the Nebraska prairie. She won acclaim for her fiction and many awards for representing what it means to be a cornhusker.

This is from the poem "Prairie" published in the collection titled Cornhuskers in 1918 by Henry Holt and Company. The collection is over 100 poems and won Sandburg a tremendous following across the United States as a man with the "prairie voice."
