For Jeff and Diane Cunningham, the best part about running their business is not knowing what’s going to happen to it.

As the owners of Burlington Antiques, 201 North 7th Street in Lincoln, the Cunninghams don’t know for certain what their busiest day of the week or time of the year will be. They don’t even know what antiques they’re going to be selling in the future.

“We look for specific things,” Jeff said. “But you never know what you’re going to find.”

The Cunninghams can’t offer up a description of the average customer, other than that they are normally between 20 and 120 years old, or what their customers typically look for when they get inside the store.

That might be because there is no typical item that can be found inside the store. Every nook and cranny of Burlington Antiques is filled year round - most of it is glassware, china, books, furniture and pottery. Diane’s favorite antiques are typically pieces of jewelry and Jeff prefers the vintage beer cans and posters.

“We sell a little bit of everything,” Diane said.

The Cunninghams buy antiques from about 25 different dealers. Sometimes they buy and sell random antiques, other times a customer has something specific they are looking for and it’s up to the Cunninghams to work the phones and find it for them.

“Some (of our customers) are one time buyers and others have been coming back to us for 14 years,” Jeff said.

Saturdays sometimes bring huge numbers of people into the store just to “look at things that remind them of their childhood,” Diane said. Other times on a Monday, only two or three people will come into the store all day, but one of them will buy a $2,000 piece of antique jewelry.

“But they all count,” Diane said of her customers. Even the customers who are there just to look at the Cunningham’s guard dog, Max.

The Cunninghams bought the business 14 years ago. Saturdays in the fall fill the store in Lincoln's historic Haymarket district with people from all across the state in town to watch the Cornhuskers. Those days are an important time for the Cunninghams.

They sell programs and sports stories from the Cornhusker’s national championships years that are still protected by plastic wrapping and Jeff said they typically sell more Husker memorabilia when the season gets closer.

“We tried to get away from the cooperate structure,” Jeff said. "People come here to see things from the past and learn the history behind those things.”
