Today, we look at Blue Planet, the spot in Omaha for the best organic, gluten-free and just plain good food. By becoming a Locker Pass member today, and showing your card at Blue Planet, you’ll get 10 percent off any order, including catering, up to $100! Hard to beat that, right?

Enjoy the story written by Ryan Boetel, also known as Boetel on the HL site!

Omaha is getting a bigger kick out of Blue Planet than the company anticipated.

“When I first started out I thought we were going to have a hippie crowd,” said Dan Tweedy, the general manager of Blue Planet Natural Grill on 6307 Center Street in Omaha. “But we’re really becoming more and more mainstream.”

Tweedy said Blue Planet, which opened last November, is a great place to grab classic American foods, like burgers, sandwiches and wraps, in a healthy, organic and environmentally-friendly way.

The fruits and vegetables are organic and the meat was raised without hormones or antibiotics. Even the plastic forks and knifes are corn-based and completely biodegradable.

“I thought, ‘it can’t be that hard’,” Tom Smith, one of the two Blue Planet owners, said about running an organic restaurant. “And it really isn’t.”

Smith, who is also a chiropractor in Bellevue, said he emphasizes eating healthy to all of his patients. He realized however, that there aren’t too many restaurants around for people who want to eat organically or have to follow a gluten-free diet.

That’s where Blue Planet comes in. Anything on the menu can be prepared gluten-free, and there is something on the menu for everyone, no matter how stringent their diet. For example there are regular cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, and a veggie burger made especially for vegans.

“I’m not much of a vegetarian but I just had the (the vegan burger) for lunch,” Smith said. “It’s really good.”

Tweedy said when the store first opened its customers came to the grill to eat organically. Now those organic-eaters have told their friends about Blue Planet and people are showing up just to try the food.

Most of the employees at Blue Planet work there because of the store’s ideology, said Tweedy.

“Most of our applicants are drawn to us because of the concept of what we are,” Tweedy said. “Lots of people really believe in what we’re doing here… A lot of people want to see us grow.

“But most people are just looking for a good lunch.
