An idea no one else had and an owner’s hands-on management style turned Another Home into one of the best small businesses in Lincoln.
The store, at 5221 S 48th Street, buys and sells upscale, high-quality furniture. In 2008, the Lincoln SCORE chapter picked it as the best small business in the city.
An ever-changing collection of used furniture with a high-quality guarantee, Another Home is different from other furniture retailers. The prices are much cheaper than buying new and you can’t get couches, chairs, pictures and dressers at as high of quality at a garage sale or second hand store, said owner Susan Danekas.
“People are receptive of paying a fair and reasonable price for quality things,” Danekas said.
All furniture sold at Another Home is inspected to ensure it’s up to the company’s standards. Everything is 10-years-old or newer and gently-used. It hasn’t been exposed to pets or smoking.
“I wouldn’t bring into the store what I wouldn’t put in my home,” Danekas said.
The store’s customers are a mix of one-time buyers and regulars. Some come in weekly, just to see what’s new. Danekas said when the store buys a piece of furniture it’s typically sold within the week – which means the layout of the 2,500-square-foot store changes constantly at the hands of Danekas and her two part-time employees.
“You see something different every time,” said Shirley Chase, who was both buying and selling furniture at Another Home one Thursday.
Husker memorabilia usually has the quickest turnaround, Danekas said.
“Whenever we get red stuff in it sells right away,” Danekas said. “People want it for a Nebraska-themed living room.”
A struggling economy has actually been good for Another Home’s revenue. Danekas said people still desire finer things, so now more people are buying used and others are downsizing their homes or business. Those people are coming to Danekas with high quality items, working out a fair price to sell their furniture and then splitting the sale 50-50 with Another Home.
“It’s a good thing for persons looking to buy,” Danekas said. “And (Another Home) is a good thing for a person who has items and wants to resell their investments.”
Using a go-between saves money on advertising. Craigslist and E-bay are cheap, too, but they don’t always work well for selling expensive items.
“She does a pretty good job,” said Larry Mackenstadt, a retired frequent shopper at Another Home who has sold three pieces of furniture by way of the store. “Sometimes it’s been more than I expected.”
Mackenstadt was “in wandering around” on Thursday. He said sometimes he comes in looking for something particular, but mostly just likes to browse.
“Other places that are cheaper don’t have the quality,” he said. “There isn’t any junk here.”
