Guys might want to take note of this business before tailgating season starts. A gift certificate to Bang Salon and Spa might just cool off any hostility a wife feels toward the husband who just spent all-day Saturday drinking beer outside Memorial Stadium. The owner said no matter who the women is, they'll appreciate an afternoon with her.

Bang Salon and Spa, in Kearney, might seem a little out of place at first.

It’s got a “big-city” feel said owner Mary Hurst. But most their clientele comes from Kearney and small towns nearby.

Once the people - the spa occasionally caters to men - come in the door they’re met greeted with a hospitality that lets them know they’re still in small-town Nebraska.

“A lot of people tell us we’re welcoming,” Hurst said. “As long as our customers tell us that we know they obviously feel that way.”

Hurst has been in the salon business for more than 25 years, but she’s never worked at one that doubles as a relaxing getaway until she opened Bang Salon and Spa, at 5012 3rd Ave., Suite 170, in February of 2006. Besides haircuts and styling, the salon offers several different kinds of massages, skin rejuvenation sessions, tanning booths, body waxes, pedicures and manicures.

She said her 16 employees who come from all walks of life, so all her customers, who have a wide range of ages and come for different reasons, can find someone to whom they can relate.

“Anyone who comes through the door is made to feel welcome,” Hurst said. “No matter what style they are looking for.”

Jackie Miettinen, the receptionist, said women use “any excuse” to spend a day at Bang Salon and Spa.

She said the spa gets busy after Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. Sometimes women from different parts of Nebraska pick the spa and salon as a meeting point and they also serve bride and bridesmaids the day before the wedding.

When groups of women come together the staff lets them bring their own food and drinks, and they set up tables for the women to use during their pedicures, manicures or massages, Miettinen said.

“Some people just make it a habit and come in every month,” Miettinen said. “That’s just something they do for themselves.

“Besides every other reason,” she added.
