No. 30 Kicker Alex Henery (2007-present)

So, yes, Henery is a kicker. That, in itself, is a bit controversial, adding him to a list of 30 best players since 1980. That said, Henery is easily the best kicker in Nebraska history, hitting 50 of 57 field goals in his first three years and 139 of 140 extra points. Plus, five of those seven misses are from beyond 50 yards. A 47 for 49 rate inside 50 yards isn’t merely astonishing - it’s won games for NU, and kept them in countless others.

Although the Huskers lost to Texas and Virginia Tech in 2009, Henery kept NU in both games with his right foot alone. His punting, especially inside the 20-yard line, helped the Huskers win the field position battle during the last half of the season. It also earned Henery a rare honor: The Blackshirt. And if Bo can bestow that on him, it’s good enough for us.

Had Henery wanted to play college soccer - and play it well - he could have done it. He chose another path - and was wise to do it. He’ll be, in 12 months time, one of the few kickers taken in the NFL Draft. It may not be the conventional pick, but Henery belongs on the list.

Nice. A Henery is a stud. Just don't like the fact that we are ranking current players. Dont JINKS us husker locker! We had enough bad luck last season, Im ready for the ball to bounce our way.

I would never, ever put a kicker in my top 30 of any list of greatest players of any kind. And even I have no issue with this, he clearly made the difference in W/L unlike any other kicker we've ever had. But if Byron Bennett is on this list, then it's time to riot. (But oddly, Jeremy Aldrich is on my top 30 CU Buffies.Heh)

The only thing controversial about this to me is putting Henery this low. Only the QB is clearly more important than the kicker, and no position can more single-handedly influence the game - especially in college where so many teams don't have a guy who consistently makes it over 40 yards out. Henery is a game-changing player because of his accuracy and distance. His currently our best offensive player, and is the best kicker I have seen at Nebraska (I've been following since before 1980).

Nothing controversial to me about this at all.

Maybe a little controversial--and Nebraska has had some other good kickers, too. People tend to remember more recent history better (Josh Brown had a last second kick to beat Colorado, as well).

However, no one can argue that Henery doesn't have stones as big as watermelons.

I don't mind the pick.
