But what about the walk-ons and the athletes that are not on scholarship? Not everyone on the team has a scholarship. For example, the last I heard, Alex Henery is still not on scholarship. He saved the Colorado game for us. Allowed us to get to a higher echelon bowl game (which the University got a lot more money from), but he earned nothing. Bo got a raise for a great year. Henery got nothing (except of course the love of every Husker fan in the world).
If you use your NFL comments with the same comparison to the business world, how many people do you know that would work for nothing for 4 years while they were preparing themselves to move up the corporate ladder where they can earn the big bucks? I think the answer is zero.
My only point is that the coaches earns outrageous salaries...the athlete is grossly undercompensated.
Another point to look at is that the coaches demand that the student-athletes give 100% effort and loyalty to the school...yet the coaches continually resign and move around to where there are bigger bucks. Where is the loyalty from the coaches? Granted, that doesn't pertain to all of the coaches out there, but it is becoming increasingly more common.
1)Henery I am 98% sure will receive a scholarship he certainly deserves it. Lets not forget he turned down a soccer scholarship to walk on.
2)Pay me just enough to get by for 4 years and then pay me what the owner of my company makes or the plant manager makes(I'm down with that) sounds like a plan to me.
3) I agree coaches are overly compensated as well as professional athletes. I would do it for a fifth of what they get paid and be as happy as a pig in slop!!
4)Coaches demand 100% effort.....I would too. I gave 100 percent effort when I was in sports why shouldnt that be expected? I demand my children give 100% effort in sports. The outcome is what it is but the effort that precedes it is not optional. If you are not going to give full effort find something else to occupy your time.
5)Since this is a Husker site I will talk about the Husker athletes. It is probably a safe bet that many of the Husker walk ons could be scholarship athletes for other lesser teams so they chose this route for themselves.
6)We live in the greatest country in the world. All of the athletes we have come here on their own free will. All our athletes can leave if they so choose to. I believe we should help the athletes some more because it is the right thing to do. I however can't draw any comparisons between our athletes and indentured servants like some people have.
7) The bottom line to me is everyone has a choice to make. If you dont like the situation you are in change it. I truly love the Huskers and if I was 17 would gladly walk on or accept a scholarship without second thoughts if they came calling.
What ever happened to the idea of just playing for the love of the game? Many kids and adults do it every day

The football coach makes more - lots more - than the university president or the AD. That's just wrong. I know TO makes less than Bo, but that's his choice.Bo Bo Blackshirts!

Actually quite a few students do long term unpaid, or low wage internships at big companies just to pad their resumes in hopes of big time jobs when they graduate. Especially business students."Opinions are immunity to being told you're wrong" -Relient K

I think if our football players were paid like they were in 1950 our team would weigh 87 pounds on average. Have you noticed how much groceriesw have went up the last six years. Imagine how much they have went up in 60 years. Does anyone on this site have cold hard facts pertaining to what athletes actually get
? How much housing allowance, food allowance, tuition, spending allowance and the like do they get? If someone gets a roof over their head, fed, spending money and a free education that is pretty good to me.
