I'm glad he's not our coach also. I would say we shouldn't make too much out of what he says and how he says it. It's his job to be upbeat and positive, no matter what tools he has to work with.
The problem lies down the line in years 3 and 4 when nothing gels. That was Callahan's problem - he just didn't make anything gel and he couldn't see that it wasn't happening. He was convinced until the end that he was doing a great job. Not!

    Yo !
I guess I am wondering why ANYONE would care what Bill Callahan is doing now ? Evidently some folks dont have much to talk about ....
Sorry gotta go , Wally wants me to work on Ernest T's jalopey .

Opinions are only formed when the recipient pauses , listens , studies and then discerns for memory what is beneficial. Blind ambition only serves to promote deception within the benefactors ignorance. But then ignorance is bliss ....

    YO !
It will take longer than 3 to 4 years for any football program to GEL .
Football programs are built on patience , perserverance and coaching ability , not a short term solution. Bo will need some time and our patience to make this work. There will be some losses this year , but hopefully the good coaching that took place last year will continue and the fans will be supportive enough to let Bo succeed. There is no easy, short term solution to any of this . There are 3 or 4 programs in the Big 12 now that are out- recruiting us and sometimes outcoaching us , thier programs reflect this. Recruiting is only half the equation , hopefully we have coaches now that can get the most out of thier players.
I do agree with your theory though that ANY coach will be optimistic , even when things arent going well , THAT IS THIER JOB. What coach would come out after a loss and say , " Oh , I just cant make this happen , gloom and misery on me "?
It is a coaches job to be optimistic , even if you are blown out by Oklahoma in the first quarter , and the rest of the game is just a foregone conclusion.
