ESPN is reporting that Memphis and Western Kentucky fired their coaches today. I guess it's that time of year...
Who's on the clock, who's safe, and who's replacing who?
In no particular order (that's too much to ask on a Monday)
Dan Hawkins, Colorado: Could be gone, but CU might not be able to afford firing him
Al Groh, Virginia: I think this is the year the VU brass get tired of the 7 win seasons
Mike Sherman, Texas A&M: He's on the seat, but again, I don't know if TAMU can afford to can him. Lesson: never give a guy a 7 year contract until he's done something
Rich Rodriguez, Michigan: I think if he fails to make a bowl, he's gone. The team's regressed throughout the season
Charlie Weis, Notre Dame: His seat had cooled down until the loss to Navy. for all his offensive prowess, his defense is awful. The next few games are big for him.
Mark Richt, Georgia: Nobody's safe in the SEC and a few losses will sink you
Ralph Friedgen, Maryland: He's gone after this year, the question is whether he gets to retire
Bobby Bowden, Florida State: I think he's done, but it will be a shame if he doesn't get to leave with whatever dignity he has left
Joe Paterno, Penn State: He's not on the hot seat, but if Bobby goes, he'll go
Steve Kragthorpe, Lousiville: Gone.
Mark Mangino, Kansas: If the 'Hawks continue to lose, it's not going to be a good offseason in Lawrence...
I know there's more, but this is what I have for now. What do y'all think?"Opinions are immunity to being told you're wrong" -Relient K

Also, if Big Charlie gets the boot at Notre Dame, expect a full court press for Urban Meyer.
He's said he's not interested in the Notre Dame job, but that and a dollar will buy a cup of (not very good) coffee."Opinions are immunity to being told you're wrong" -Relient K

I don't agree with Mangino being on the way out if he loses out. Yes, there will be some unhappy people, but I don't see Kansas as being a coaching destination, Mangino has his program going in the right direction, and before Mangino, Kansas was pathetic. Mangino will have to have a few crappy seasons in a row before Kansas boots him. Remember also that Kansas is not a football school - although short term expectations have obviously risen with Kansas' relative recent success, I doubt that long term expectations - the serious ones - have come to expect and demand success in making a run at the Big 12 North every year. Maybe I'm wrong - just a vibe...
Otherwise, I would say that you are right on with your hot seats...

I guess I should have clarified.
I don't think Mangino will be fired this year even if he loses the rest of his games. But every game he loses gets one of the coldest seats in the country coming into the season a little bit warmer.
And if he doesn't go to a bowl, he's got a looooong offseason."Opinions are immunity to being told you're wrong" -Relient K

Mike Sanford gone from UNLV, that job's tailor made for a coordinator to cut his HC teeth on. As a Mountain West school, its not a bad job.
After interviewing at, what was it, New Mexico/Utah State last year, I would think Wat's name might come up in the search."Opinions are immunity to being told you're wrong" -Relient K

What's the deal with that guy anyway? I know that some people are just naturally fat, but a guy that big can drop 100lbs just by eating a little less and walking a mile every day. Really."Opinions are immunity to being told you're wrong" -Relient K

KU would be idiotic to get rid of Mangino. KU had one solid season and they think they are world beaters. Someone needs to reign in KU Fans and make them understand that they are who they are, a second rate program who will surprise every 5-10 years.
As for the assessment of the others, I would agree. I really do not like ND, so I kind of would like to see him keep screwing them up. However, I will not cry when the arrogant prick is canned.Wes

His size is certainly not a good role model for the kids. Does he have an eating disorder or somehing? A person with that kind of weight and the stress of coaching football...he's just looking for a heart attack.Bo Bo Blackshirts!

Kinda like Nebraska in the late 90's, success breeds exaggerated expectations. If they fire Mangino, they deserve the collapse they're going to get."Opinions are immunity to being told you're wrong" -Relient K
